How to paint over this

I want the grain to still show and I want to paint it lighter to match my nightstand and dresser. I was thinking the heather gray that is in the lines of dresser and stand. Would that work? Or would it just hide the grain? The bed frame is not real wood, but I can feel the grain Indents. Also, would that look corny matching the bed frame with the gray in stand and dresser?
