Brightening wood look tile

I have a cherry red wood look tile, we've dealt with it and now getting used to HTP, I wanted to see if there's a way to change without completely covering the tile. Would a gel stain work? I have some other color sample tiles but none of what we have in home. Any tips? Would gel stain work? Water down the paint?
