What should I use for protective coat on heavy used end tables?

I am painting my end tables which are very heavily used. I think I should put a protective coat. Appreciate any recommendations. I am doing oyster on bottom and either weathered gel or darker color on top. Not sure yet. If anyone has ideas that would great.
