The tale of the lonely front door…
Late last summer, I decided to paint my front door. I picked out French toile as my house’s logs are stained a dark chocolate brown. I posted pictures and several suggested that I paint the screen door too. So, I did.
For a log house, I felt like my home still didn’t look inviting. A friend suggested adding shutters. I found some on FB and bought them really cheaply! Then, I immediately ordered more French toile. As I was in the midst of painting them, Paula did a “live” where she talked about keeping her outside colors more natural. I sort of freaked out. Normally, I love all the stuff Paula does; although, there have been a few times I questioned her sanity! But, I digress. ???? However, her reasoning on outside colors really made me second guess myself! But since I had already ordered the paint and started I continued painting the shutters.
I finally convinced myself the blue was still a color from nature. You know - the sky! Okay, I know it’s not quite the same shade of blue but sometimes I’ve just got to lie to myself.
My husband reluctantly agreed to helping me hang them. Oh, my… we hung two and they looked pregnant, as our logs are not even. Now, I was truly upset. I had bought the shutters, bought the paint, spent hours cleaning and painting them and they looked bowed and horrible. I thought, we can buy some shims and that will help us level them off. That didn’t begin to solve the problem.
Finally, I hired a young man (ouch) to hang them. He had to level them off with 2 by 4s and 4 by 4s pieces of lumber. Yep, shims would never have worked.
I posted picture of my hung shutters and still thought the house didn’t say, “Welcome! Come on in and have a cup of coffee, sweet tea or glass of wine!” Instead it mocked me and said, “The crazy woman, who lives here, thinks these blue shutters should have looked good and said, ‘Hi, y’all! Come on it.’”
Anyway, this past week-end we added some landscape to our barren and forlorn front yard. And now, I can see my vision beginning to grow. (Yes, the was an intended pun.)
So, my “Let’s paint the front door because it’s a nice quick cheap project turned into a bit more. Of course, I am sure my ever progressing project story is unique to me. Hahaha! Not.
