Gel stain on leather

I’m staining an old recliner that is worn more in some spots than others. I applied stain to those areas and blotted the extra off rather than rubbing as shown when staining wood. I’m waiting until it dries now. Is this the proper technique? I couldn’t find a video using the gel stain on leather. I’m planning to stain the whole recliner once I get the worn spots covered. Does anyone know if this is going to work? I do have paint as a backup if this doesn’t work.
